Hepatic lipidosis, or feline fatty liver syndrome, is one of the most common liver diseases in cats. It occurs when fat accumulates excessively in the liver, impairing its function. This condition is life-threatening but can be treated if caught early.

Causes

Hepatic lipidosis is often triggered by anorexia (loss of appetite) or a prolonged period of inadequate calorie intake, leading to fat mobilization to the liver. Common underlying causes include:

  • Stress: Such as a change in environment or routine.
  • Illness: Dental disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, cancer, or gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Obesity: Overweight cats are more prone when they stop eating.
