Dogs and cats have two types of hair – primary and secondary. Primary hairs are longer and cover more surface area. They also tend to be coarser than their shorter counterparts, making them better suited for colder weather conditions. Secondary hairs tend to be finer than primary ones. This type is best suited for warmer weather conditions because they provide insulation against heat loss while still allowing air circulation around the skin.
